What to Look for When Shopping for a Sun Block?

It’s not new that applying a good sun block must be part of your daily skincare routine. Unfortunately, there’s a lot of information that you need to keep track of when shopping for sunscreen. Each person has different sunscreen needs. Keep reading to find your next favorite sunscreen.

Sun Block

Choose a Sun Block with SPF

Skin cancer is the most common malignant tumor in the US. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, “Nearly 20 Americans die from melanoma every day. In 2021, it is estimated that 7,180 deaths will be attributed to melanoma — 4,600 men and 2,580 women.” It added that all types of skin cancer can be caused by exposure to both natural and artificial UV light. AAD recommends the use of regular sunscreen to lower the risk of melanoma, which is the deadliest form of skin cancer.

To effectively protect your skin from the dangerous effects of UVB rays, use a sun block with at least SPF 30. If you have fair skin or if you burn easily, you need higher SPF. It’s important to note that no sun block can fully block the sun’s rays. And there’s no proof that SPF that is higher than 50 protects any better.

Read the Label

Not all sunscreen products are created equal. Thus, you must ensure that the product has the key ingredients to provide the coverage that you need. To give you the protection you need, you need a product that can provide UVA and UVB coverage. Thus, find a product with a broad spectrum in the label. You may want to avoid ingredients that can cause allergic skin reactions.

Buy the Product for Your Skin Type

Most sun block products are designed to protect dry, oily or sensitive skin. If you have dry skin, you need to look for ingredients such as oil and aloe. Make sure to avoid a product spray with alcohol. On the other hand, if you have oily skin, you may need lightweight lotion. But if you have sensitive skin, your best bets are fragrance-free and hypoallergenic. You should also avoid products with alcohol and preservatives.

Go Beyond the Use of Sunscreen

As mentioned earlier, no product can fully protect your skin against the sun’s rays. Thus, when you head out, make sure to use the right clothing. Hats, for instance, can offer a great barrier. As you put on more clothing, you get more protection from the damaging effects of the sun’s rays. But avoid wearing clothes made of woven fabrics because they have tiny holes between their threads. Instead, choose to wear synthetic fibers.
